            The establishment of the District & Sessions Judge Upper Assam District Jorhat was created on the 15th November 1948 and has been made permanent w.e.f the 1st day of April 1953. The first roll of honour of District & Sessions Judge of Assam Valley, Upper Assam Districts, Jorhat District was Mr. S.K Das, MA, BL. Presently, the territorial jurisdiction of the District is extended over 2(two) sub-divisions namely Majuli Sub-Division and Titabar Sub-Division. Altogether, the establishment of the District & Sessions Judge and the Chief Judicial Magistrate comprise of 15 courts manned by Judicial Officers of various grades. The District & Sessions Judge together with the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Complex , Jorhat is situated in the heart of the city. The Present District & Sessions Judge as the head of the establishment is Shri Vinod Kr. Chandak. The present Chief Judicial Magistrate, Jorhat the head of all the Criminal Courts is Smti. Sharmila Bhuyan.

                 The existing Courts within the District & Sessions Judge establishment, Jorhat are :-

(1) The Court of the District & Sessions Judge,
(2) The Court of the Addl. District & Sessions Judge,
(3)The Court of the Civil Judge and Astt. Sessions Judge,
(4) The Court of Munsiff No. 1,
(5) The Court of Munsiff No. 2,
(6) The Court of Munsiff(M), (Majuli Sub-division, Majuli) and
(7) The Court of Munsiff(M), (Titabar Sub-division, Titabar).

                  All the Criminal Courts in the Jorhat District are under the establishment of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Jorhat. The existing courts within the said establishment are :-

(1) The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate,
(2)The Court of Addl. Chief Judicial Magistrate, 
(3)The Court of Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate(S),
(4) The Court of Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate(M),(Majuli Sub-division, Majuli)
(5) The Court of Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate(M),(Titabar Sub-division, Titabar)
(6)Three Courts of Judicial Magistrate Ist class.
